A few months ago ETECSA announced that it would test the 4G network in Varadero, Cárdenas, and several municipalities in Havana and Mariel.
The 4G speed has been fast and stable. However, it has declined in both aspects as the number of users grows. Nevertheless, at any time, the service it provides is far better than 3G, which is totally chaotic.
Another great advantage is that it allows video calls, otherwise almost impossible with the current 3G condition. This is essential for Cubans on the Island, since most of them have relatives and/or friends abroad.
Requirements to access the 4G network in Cuba:#
• Have a cell phone that supports the 4G network in the 1800 MHz band
• Own a USIM
• Spend more than 100 MB on average each month
• Connect frequently from an area with coverage of this network
Tip: For a user to know a device supports the 4G network, a SMS must be sent to 2266 with the text “SIM”. The user will get a response automatically with the information required.
Those who meet the requirements can configure their mobile phones and try to connect to the 4G before ETECSA identifies them as users eligible for the test.
To configure the settings you must direct your device to prioritize the 4G. If connection takes place frequently from an area with coverage of this mobile network, especially at night, you may be able to use it even if the company has not notified you.
Anyway, there are very few privileged so far. According to official data released by mid-2019, out of the 5 600 000 mobile phone lines on the Island, only 71 000 have had access to 4G (1.3%). A very small number compared to the 2.5 million that have been connected at least once to 3G (45%).
The 4G network operates at a speed ranging 10–50 Mbps, depending on the area and the schedule. It is advisable to try to connect to this network, which can be a way out to the instability in telecommunications in Cuba. Although, it must be necessary to monitor the mobile data package because it will be consumed much faster.
